Apple’s Forthcoming Tablet Device To handle ‘Enhanced’ E-Books

According to a January 19 article in the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s much anticipated tablet device is rumored to support enhanced e-books.  Enhanced e-books will include video, author interviews and social-networking applications, bringing web technology more squarely into the reading experience. Talks between Apple and HarperCollins Publishers indicate that the new e-books may command a higher price than most standard e-books, but it is not yet known whether the e-books will be sold through a new storefront or through the iTunes store. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Apple purchased LaLa, an online music store, so it is possible that either LaLa or iTunes is getting a makeover in time for the tablet’s launch.  By the way, HarperCollins, which is owned by News Corp, is one of several publishers in talks with Apple.
