Google Gadgets and the OpenSocial Foundation

Google is continuing to forge new ways for people and organizations to communicate, share, organize and find information.  A particularly promising initiative with large players is the recently announced OpenSocial Foundation.  Google is partnering with Yahoo! and MySpace to try to standardize the social web.

For its part, Google is continuing to improve the usefulness of ‘gadgets’, which were originally designed for use only on igoogle web pages but can now be added to any web page.  Is the OpenSocial movement going to make google gadget-like modules ubiquitous in the social web platform?  Where does that leave Facebook, with their API that requires module contributors to have both php programming skills and web server space?
